About
La Casa del Tío Güero, nestled in the heart of Oaxaca de Juárez on Manuel García Vigil street, stands as a vivid celebration of authentic Oaxacan cuisine and culture. This charming eatery impresses not just with its bold and complex flavors but also with an inviting atmosphere dotted with artisanal decorations and a remarkable collection of traditional masks that tell stories of the region’s rich heritage.
The culinary craftsmanship here is unmistakable. Dishes like the tlayudas and chile rellenos showcase a masterful balance of tradition and creativity. The stuffed chiles, in particular, stand out—each bite reveals a harmonious fusion of textures and spices, some recalling unexpected notes, like the cinnamon and fruit-laden veggie chile relleno, which evokes a subtle Moroccan flair. Portion sizes are generous, ensuring a fulfilling experience without compromising quality.
Service at La Casa del Tío Güero generally mirrors the warmth of the food—friendly, attentive, and unhurried—though at times the busy atmosphere can create slight delays. The restaurant’s pricing remains remarkably reasonable, offering great value through thoughtfully crafted lunch specials that feature robust soups, hearty mains like chicken or pork mole, and refreshing drinks.
Beyond the plates, the ambiance is both relaxed and engaging. The handcrafted furniture and the intriguing array of Oaxaca’s cultural artifacts create a space where diners can savor their meals while connecting with the local spirit. Whether you’re indulging in a flavorful breakfast of huevos rancheros divorciados or a carefully paired wine from the full bar, La Casa del Tío Güero delivers an immersive culinary journey that’s both genuine and memorable.
“ Outstanding restaurant. The food was incredibly well done, we ordered things we have never heard of from the menu and everything that came to the table was extraordinary. The flavours were powerful and well balanced, and the portion sizes were very generous. The service was great, very friendly, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was very chill. The price was also super reasonable, we expected it to be a lot more than it was. One of the best places we visited in Oaxaca, 100% worth visiting! ”
“ This place was quite lovely. I really appreciated all the artesanal decorations and furniture they had in here, it was entertaining to look at the masks on the wall and guess the prices of them. Only downside was that there's only one restroom, and almost everyone from our group needed to go at the end so it just became a line, hehe. The service was very easy to work with and one of the waiters remembered exactly what I ordered, despite the fact that he was serving a group of 13! So I thought that was very impressive. I ordered huevos rancheros with verde sauce and a horchata--I really liked the horchata! The huevos rancheros was pretty decent, I just sometimes forget that I'm not a fan of drenched eggs and tortilla, but otherwise it was good. ”
“ Food was great, the tlayudas were really tasty and the decorations was cool. Just the service was like always running and not very customer oriented, just as a recommendation. ”
“ I have now been here many times. I eat here any time I happen to be in Oaxaca, which is often. Very tasty food, above all the various stuffed chiles (chile relleno). Full bar/ wine. Friendly servers. And a terrific collection of masks! Not fancy, not expensive, and very, very good ”
“ We had an excellent breakfast here. Good service & nice atmosphere. I enjoyed my huevos rancheros divorciados, fresh fruit to start, a double espresso and fresh squeezed orange juice. ”
